“Fashion & Color”

Minzu University of China Academy of Fine Arts Graduates Show was held in the Central Hall of 751D•PARK in Beijing on May 19th, 2015.

The theme of the show is “Fashion & Color”, which means to the innovative presentation of Chinese traditional culture in the contemporary fashion design. The designers appreciate and interpret the traditional culture of Chinese clothes through different perspectives, such as fabric transformation, design methods, and the traditional crafts, to attempt and explore the various possibility of design, seek the combination of traditional culture and fashion culture, and inherit Chinese traditional clothes on the basis of promoting the common development of fashion culture and traditional culture.

The collections of “Fashion & Color” are finished by Academy of Fine Arts Graduates in six months. Inspired from Chinese traditional culture elements, the designs take clothes as the carrier and try to present the connotation of Chinese traditional culture.” Shang (Fashion)” has the same pronunciation of “above” in Chinese, which also means the “the ancient time”. Also, it indicates the nobility and fashion. “Fashion & Color” is the recollection of Chinese traditional culture, and an understanding of designers’ favorite color.

Minzu University of China Academy of Fine Arts Graduates designs draw inspiration from ancient Chinese culture. The Works choose national craft as design elements, like dyeing and printing, velvet, quilts, Plaited stitch, and drape. Thick woolen fabric, light elegant yarn fabrics, pure cotton and linen fabrics, and also noble silk fabrics are shown in these fine works, embodying the designers’ skillful mastery of different material.

The use of national elements is a highlight of this design collection. Some designs choose the perspective of crafts, such as tie-dye process of Bai ethnic minority as design elements; some designs choose the combination of the geometric pattern of the Miao ethnic minority with plaited stitch embroidery, or the enlightenment produced by national culture is applied into the design in a humorous attitude.

Minzu University of China is the key university supported by the state “Project 211”, and key discipline unit supported by “Project 985”. Academy of Fine Arts has been committed to the research program on ethnic areas and Chinese traditional culture, and achieved fruitful results.
